What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick screening number that relates your weight to your height. It’s calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The standard categories are: under 18.5 (underweight), 18.5–24.9 (healthy), 25–29.9 (overweight), and 30+ (obese).

BMI’s limitations

BMI doesn’t distinguish muscle from fat, so very muscular people can read as β€œoverweight” despite low body fat. It also doesn’t account for where fat is stored. Use it as a rough guide alongside other measures like waist circumference β€” not a diagnosis.
